Doing this has been linked to help with fat loss in two ways. The obvious way is that it'll make you more full before your meals and thus help you to eat less. This mechanism is not just a myth, it has been proven by researchers who had two different groups of 24 participants follow a low calorie diet for 3 months. The first group drank 500 mL (about 2 cups) of water before eating and the other group did not drink before their meals. The researchers found that the subjects who who drank the water prior to eating, not only consumed less food, but they lost nearly 50% more weight than the group who did not drink before eating their meals.

In another study, researchers found that participants drinking 2 cups of cold water on an empty stomach had shown a 30% increase in their metabolic rate.
